Angels in the Bible
Angels sent as messengers, for example:
Genesis 22:11:But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied.
Judges 6:12, 22: When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior."
When Gideon realised that it was the angel of the LORD, he exclaimed, "Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!"
Luke 1:11-19 An an angel of the Lord appeared to him
the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well on in years." The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
Revelation 22:1,16: Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star."
Angels sent by God to protect, guide or rescue, for example:
Exodus 23:20:"See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.
Numbers 20:16 but when we cried out to the LORD, he heard our cry and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt
Psalms 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.
Daniel 3:28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
Acts 5:19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.
Angels sent to administer divine judgement:
1 Kings 19:35:That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning - there were all the dead bodies!
1 Chronicles 21:12 three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD - days of plague in the land with the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel.' Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me."
Angels involved around the birth of Christ, for example:
Matthew 1:20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Luke 1:26-35: In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; his kingdom will never end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Angels involved around the resurrection of Christ:
28:2,5: There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it
The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
Warning! Not all angels are good guys, for example:
2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!
